If you’re tired of the look of your countertops, but can’t afford to buy new, consider painting them to give them a fresh new look. Depending on the size of the surface area you want to cover, you can expect to pay anywhere from $ 50.00 – $ 100.00 for this simply DIY home improvement project, which can be completed in as little as a day. We’ve provided easy-to-follow instructions and a helpful supply to help you learn how to paint over laminate countertops.

Note – In order for this DIY home improvement project to come out looking best, the countertops you will be painting over need to be in good condition. There should be no dings or chips or excessive scratch marks.

Materials needed to paint over laminate countertops:

– TSP Cleaner
– Painters tape
– Protective work gloves
– 150 grit sandpaper
– Primer for nonporous surfaces
– Acrylic latex enamel
– Clear polyurethane
– Paint roller
– Roller heads

First thing’s first – Prep the countertops by sanding them with 150-grit sandpaper to rough up the surface. This will help the paint to adhere. Wipe away the dust and give them a thorough cleaning with TSP Cleaner. TSP Cleaner is a product you can find at any hardware, paint, or home improvement store. It works to remove any trace amount of grease, oil or grime. Make sure to wear protective gloves while working with TSP. Once you’ve completed this process, you’re ready to start painting!

How to paint over laminate countertops:

STEP 1 – If you are able to do so, remove the sink. If you are unable to remove the sink, cover the bowl with newspaper or plastic and tape off the area around the countertop.

STEP 2 – Prime the surface with a primer made for nonporous surfaces. An acrylic primer can be substituted, if desired.

STEP 3 – Paint over laminate countertops with either an acrylic latex enamel paint, or one designed specifically for countertop coverage. If you want to have a rough finish that resembles granite countertops consider using Modern Masters Countertops Transformations.

STEP 4 – Allow the first coat to dry 30 – 60 minutes and apply a second coat.

STEP 5 – Allow the paint to dry overnight.

STEP 6 – Seal the newly painted countertops with clear polyurethane to protect them from chipping and from water damage.

Additional tips –

Do not use the sink connected to the countertops for several days after painting.

After you paint laminate countertops, do not use harsh chemicals to clean them. Instead, use warm water and vinegar, or a mild detergent, to get them clean.

Do not allow water to sit on the countertops. Wipe them down after each use.
